The Gap: Facebook is the dominant gateway to news in the Philippines — 91% of Filipino internet users name it among their online news sources, more than any other platform (Pulse Asia, July 2026). Yet only about a third of Filipinos have developed a consistent habit of verifying what they see, most citing lack of time or not knowing how (Internews Philippines study, via PIDS). And among those who do verify through social media, more check what an influencer said (35%) than consult an actual fact-checker (26%) (Reuters Institute Digital News Report, 2025). The trusted, sourced fact-checking already exists — what's missing is easy access to it at the exact moment and place someone is asking the question.
Positioning: SuriinPH does not compete with IFCN-certified fact-checkers such as VERA Files, Rappler, or AFP. It exists to extend their work — surfacing their published fact-checks, alongside government records and news reporting, directly into the comment thread where a claim is being discussed.
What It Is: SuriinPH is an AI-assisted fact-checking assistant that Filipino Facebook users invoke by tagging @SuriinPH under a post or comment containing a claim they want checked. It replies publicly, in the same thread, with a sourced, claim-scoped explanation — visible to everyone who sees the original post.
How It Works: A user tags @SuriinPH under a specific post or comment. The system checks recognized Philippine fact-checking sources, government records, and relevant news reporting for that specific claim, then generates a short, sourced explanation — never a conclusion without a citation — and posts it publicly in the same thread.
Current State: SuriinPH is currently in closed testing, limited to an allowlist of test accounts, ahead of any broader public rollout.
